Joan Kelley

Joan Kelley has been part of the Language Diversity and Literacy Development Research Group at HGSE for a decade. With expertise in applying research findings to instructional decisions, her work includes curriculum development, teacher professional development, and workshops to educators and parents across the country outlining how to build language and pre-reading skills from the earliest years. Among many other projects that Joan has supported or spearheaded during the past ten years, she led a study that investigated standard vocabulary and literacy instructional practices in middle school English language arts classrooms, supported the implementation of a new literacy initiative for a large urban school district in Texas, and was a lead writer for the Boston Public School new first grade literacy curriculum. Joan is currently developing an online tool for parents of children 0-9 as part of the Parent Uptake Project: PUP Reading gives parents the chance to assess their children’s strengths and weaknesses in the component skills of reading, receive immediate feedback, and get advice on specific and simple ways to support their children in the everyday. Joan earned her B.A. from Harvard College and her Ed.M in Language and Literacy from HGSE.
